HostingCon 2011

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Now the dust has settled on HostingCon 2011, and the team has recovered from the jetlag a quick post on how it all went. Lots of interest in goMobi both on stand and at the sessions and our unofficial HostingCon mobile site  http://hc2011.mobi was a big hit with the attendees covering all the news parties, schedule and more.  Some photos here.

People are telling us they need a solution that brings the latest technology developments together in a mobile web solution that is cost effective and easy to use. The new mobile marketing features of the latest goMobi release like QR codes and social media integration are resonating strongly with an increasingly mobile savvy market. The agenda has moved on from “what to do with mobile” to “what can mobile do for me and my business”.

We were of course delighted to announce our partnership with Parallels to make goMobi available as an APS package.  So now the 10,000-plus Web services providers and resellers who use the Parallels platform can offer goMobi to their customers.  Lots of positive pickup in the Twittersphere, thanks all for picking up the story on Twitter.

Now just as we’re back in the office with our feet under the desk, it’s time to start preparing for our next event. See you at Adtech London 2011 where we are Official Mobile Partner. Check out http://adtechuk.mobi on your phone.

The proof is in the Parallels platform

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

goMobi LogoToday, dotMobi announced the latest “good news” story on goMobi, our award-winning mobile site building and content maintenance platform: dotMobi has taken advantage of the Application Packaging Standard (APS) to make goMobi available to the 10,000-plus Web services providers and resellers who use the Parallels platform.

Just as the .mobi domain has continued to grow as the standard for naming content — more than one million domains registered and growing — goMobi is fast emerging as the standard tool for mobile content creation and maintenance. Finding new ways to make goMobi available is always part of the internal discussions we have at dotMobi, and we’re very excited to bring goMobi to Parallels.

For those of you who are not familiar with it or only know its PC-emulation software for the Macintosh, Parallels is a worldwide leader in software that is used by companies who offer a full range of Web services (like hosting) to their customers. With the APS packaging that dotMobi has done, Web services companies can easily and quickly add goMobi into their product mix– think “plug and play.” This means that their customers can go mobile and give themselves an opportunity to consider using .mobi to identify that mobile content.

As we previously mentioned a few weeks back, goMobi recently graduated to  version 1.4 with integration with Facebook, Twitter, and foursquare (among others); QR codes and easy-to-design flyers; custom analytics and a hosted image gallery. So, with growing interest in the mobile Web — and tools like these at your disposal — there’s no better time than now to “goMobi.”

By the way, if you’re planning to attend HostingCon 2011 next week, be sure to bookmark our goMobi “buzz” site for event visitors at http://hc2011.mobi, so you can see goMobi in action. And please come visit us at booth #226.

NIC.LV and dotMobi: making Latvia mobile

Friday, May 6th, 2011

At a recent event held in the beautiful Latvian capital of Riga, we announced a joint project between the Latvian ccTLD Registry NIC.LV and dotMobi to promote awareness about the mobile Web in Latvia.

As part of this project, NIC.LV now gives all .LV registrants the option to activate a “.LV.mobi” extension corresponding to their .LV domain at no extra charge, so that they can use it to identify and  more easily promote their mobile website.

One of the key benefits of using a ccTLD domain like .LV is that it is an easy and intuitive way of providing a strong local context to the site visitors. That local context is even more relevant as Internet users become increasingly mobile, and start using their mobile phones to look for information about businesses and services around them. Adding a .mobi at the end of the ccTLD domain is the best way to build on that local context: it emphasizes that a site is both locally relevant and mobile friendly at the same time. Now, .LV domain holders can focus on promoting their online identity around their .LV domain, while enjoying the benefit of being more easily and reliably findable on mobile.

It is the first time that two TLD registries come together in such a way. We are very pleased to be working with NIC.LV on this project, as they are known for their commitment to providing innovative services and going the extra mile for the benefit of their local community.

Also, working with NIC.LV allows dotMobi’s message on the growing importance of the mobile Web to reach the Latvian market more effectively, and we are convinced that this will prove a winning combination… and an example that we can export to many other countries in the future.

To help .LV registrants exploit this opportunity and support the development of the mobile Web in Latvia, we’ve also launched the goMobi.lv site with our partner SIA Amberbit. The site gives all .LV registrants who do not have a custom-developed mobile site to use their .LV.mobi domain with goMobi to build a strong, effective mobile presence for their business.

Google says “Think Mobile” … and then goMobi

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Webinar presenter Jason Spero of Google

On February 10, Google hosted a webinar called, “Think Mobile.” Unlike many webinars, this one was packed with information. The first half of the program was a presentation on the phenomenal growth of mobile by Mary Meeker, a partner at the investment firm of Kleiner Perkins.

The second half, presented by Google’s Dennis Woodside and Jason Spero, was a “wake-up call” to businesses about going mobile and what steps they should take to get there. For example, they noted that approximately 15% of all Web traffic now is mobile. That means not having a mobile site is like closing your website one day each week.

They then outlined a five-step program that businesses should follow for going mobile. Those five steps proved to be a strong validation of the philosophy behind — and methodology for building — our award-winning goMobi service. The five steps Google outlined during the webinar are:

  1. Build a mobile-specific site. (Three statements of importance: “Be prepared to let go of your desktop content.” “Build something and get it out there.” “Don’t spend forever doing it.” Those three statements are at the core of why we designed goMobi to work the way we did.)
  2. Build local. Your mobile site should have local in mind since one-third of mobile searches have “local intent.”
  3. Make it personal. Harness the personal aspects of mobile.
  4. Track independently. Make sure that you track activity on the mobile site separately from your desktop website.
  5. Iterate. Keep tweaking the site as you learn how people use it.

goMobi follows these same steps in helping small businesses create dynamic, valuable mobile websites. goMobi is a total solution, delivering a complete mobile website in mere minutes using existing Web content while delivering the best user experience possible, just as Google outlined it in their webinar. goMobi lets you:

  1. Build a mobile-specific site with information for on-the-go users and mobile-friendly features to help book more business.
  2. Build local with maps, business hours, coupons and reservations to encourage in-person visits.
  3. Make it personal by maintaining consistent branding for your business as well as stimulating word-of-mouth with links to social media.
  4. Track activity on the mobile site separately from your desktop website using Google Analytics.
  5. Iterate — and reiterate — your site content as often as you like while you test what will best drive additional business for you.

If you already use goMobi, you’ll know that it walks you through each of these points as you build your goMobi site.

And if you haven’t yet gone mobile, why not? The Web experts at Google are showing you that you’re missing business by not being mobile. And using goMobi ensures that you’ll follow the best practices for going mobile as laid out by Google.

So get going … and goMobi!

ICANN #38: a very special event for goMobi and the .mobi domain

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Logo ICANN Brussels

The latest ICANN meeting (#38) that took place in Brussels definitely lived up to expectations — and not only in terms of beers and chocolates. Important steps were taken towards the introduction of new global top-level domains (gTLDs). The approval of IDN TLDs for China and Taiwan sent a positive signal to the millions of people who write in scripts other than Roman that the Internet really is for everyone. Also, the ICM Registry had reasons to be pleased, as the ongoing .xxx saga seems to be heading for a close.

It was also a special meeting for the dotMobi team. On June 21, we formally announced our brand-new product, goMobi, designed  to give small and medium businesses easy, fast and complete access to the booming mobile market. goMobi has definitely generated a lot of interest, and kept us all very busy discussing opportunities with partners, both old and new.

goMobi also made a strong impression on the ICANN community via the brand-new ICANN.mobi site, which was built using goMobi. While ICANN has used a meeting-specific mobile site for its past few events, the use of ICANN.mobi at the Brussels meeting received a lot of positive feedback and also broke previous mobile site usage records. For instance, during the Brussels meeting, ICANN.mobi received 1,859 visits. A year earlier, at the ICANN Sydney meeting, the ICANN.mobi site received only 568 visits. And page views in Sydney were 2,227 while in Brussels that number jumped to 3,648.

Considering the ICANN crowd and its deep ties to technology, it’s not surprising that most mobile visitors were using an iPhone (44.9%) or a Blackberry (28.2%). Androids and Nokias were also used to access the site as was the occasional iPad.

The official schedule was the most popular area visited, with the ICANN event Twitter feed and the “Find the Conference Center” functions next in popularity. Since the meeting ran in parallel with the World Cup, we included a special “World Cup Planner” area which received 90 unique visits. While a good number, it certainly shows that ICANN attendees are more focused on the future of the Internet than anything else.

dotMobi’s next event presence will be at HostingCon 2010, July 19-21 in Austin, where we’ll be in booth #535 with our friends from Afilias — and where dotMobi is the official mobile partner of the event. Be sure to look out for hostingcon.mobi if you’re attending.

Talking mobile with African developers

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Icann_meeting_nbo_logo
A week has now passed since the end of the ICANN Nairobi meeting. The amazing friendliness of the Kenyans and the great effort of local organizers and ICANN staff made the stay in Nairobi particularly pleasant. Aside from interesting discussions and grilled crocodile at the gala dinner, I am particularly happy to have had the chance to meet some local developers and tech entrepreneurs and talk about dotMobi and mobile Web in Africa.

I was invited to speak at the iHub, an interesting space for technologists, investors, tech companies and even hackers that opened very recently in Nairobi. After a talk by the W3C's Thomas Roessler on mobile Web standards, I had the chance to give an overview on dotMobi. It was good to go beyond the .mobi domain and talk about all the cool services that dotMobi offers to developers and content owners interested in extending their reach onto the mobile Web. From our marketing sourcebook mobiThinking and our developer community mobiForge, to our testing tool mobiReady, our award-winning DeviceAtlas and Instant Mobilizer products, and the very cool WordPress Mobile Pack, dotMobi's suite of products received very positive feedback and a lot of questions from the audience.

Finally, in leaving the stage I asked the audience what can Europeans and North Americans learn from Kenya's experience with mobile Web. The response: Get down to business and focus on what is really important for the mobile users, rather than on the special effects … in mobile, less is more!

Just a week to go …

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Here at dotMobi, we’ve been so busy preparing for the availability of our new Chinese IDN / keywords bundle next week that I didn’t realize how quiet we’ve been on our blog.

The dotMobi / Huarui bundle of keywords and Chinese-language .mobi domains will be available beginning at 4 a.m. UTC on October 29, 2009, and will finish at 4 a.m. UTC on November 28, 2009. Immediately after on November 28, general registration will commence, and the keyword / Chinese-language .mobi domain bundle will be available at standard prices.

As you might guess, doing business in China is a unique experience, which is why this has absorbed much of the dotMobi team’s time. But one very big plus we have by being an Ireland-based company is help from Enterprise Ireland, who work around the world to develop Irish businesses internationally. Their help was extremely valuable in preparing to bring our first China-specific service to market.

To kick-off the launch activities, there was a formal signing ceremony in Beijing on October 13, 2009. Below is a photo from the event. In front on the left is Yang Zemin, President of the China Academy of Telecommunications Research (CATR), and on the right is Trey Harvin, CEO of dotMobi. Behind them, left to right, are Ambassador Declan Kelleher, Ireland’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Minister Billy Kelleher T. D., and Hugh Cooney, Chairman of Enterprise Ireland.
