NIC.LV and dotMobi: making Latvia mobile

Friday, May 6th, 2011

At a recent event held in the beautiful Latvian capital of Riga, we announced a joint project between the Latvian ccTLD Registry NIC.LV and dotMobi to promote awareness about the mobile Web in Latvia.

As part of this project, NIC.LV now gives all .LV registrants the option to activate a “.LV.mobi” extension corresponding to their .LV domain at no extra charge, so that they can use it to identify and  more easily promote their mobile website.

One of the key benefits of using a ccTLD domain like .LV is that it is an easy and intuitive way of providing a strong local context to the site visitors. That local context is even more relevant as Internet users become increasingly mobile, and start using their mobile phones to look for information about businesses and services around them. Adding a .mobi at the end of the ccTLD domain is the best way to build on that local context: it emphasizes that a site is both locally relevant and mobile friendly at the same time. Now, .LV domain holders can focus on promoting their online identity around their .LV domain, while enjoying the benefit of being more easily and reliably findable on mobile.

It is the first time that two TLD registries come together in such a way. We are very pleased to be working with NIC.LV on this project, as they are known for their commitment to providing innovative services and going the extra mile for the benefit of their local community.

Also, working with NIC.LV allows dotMobi’s message on the growing importance of the mobile Web to reach the Latvian market more effectively, and we are convinced that this will prove a winning combination… and an example that we can export to many other countries in the future.

To help .LV registrants exploit this opportunity and support the development of the mobile Web in Latvia, we’ve also launched the goMobi.lv site with our partner SIA Amberbit. The site gives all .LV registrants who do not have a custom-developed mobile site to use their .LV.mobi domain with goMobi to build a strong, effective mobile presence for their business.

Limited-time promotion: free domain names from Gandi

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Logo_gandiYou may have heard about this elsewhere but just in case …

To celebrate its tenth anniversary, Gandi is giving away 55,000 domain vouchers. That means you can get a free domain name for one year. And yes, that includes .mobi domains.

To claim your domain name, visit Gandi's special anniversary site and choose your .mobi domain of interest. Then, when checking out, enter your voucher code. Yes, it's that simple.

This promotion ends on March 10, 2010, so be sure to visit now. (By the way, there are a limited number of vouchers available each day. And like most promotions, other limitations apply and are outlined on Gandi's special anniversary site.)

dotMobi is now a member of the LACTLD

LACTLD
As you'll see in this announcement, dotMobi has been admitted as a member of LACTLD — a long acronym for the longer "Latin American and Caribbean ccTLDs Organization." The LACTLD is a not-for-profit organization of the ccTLD managers in Latin
America and the Caribbean. It's the regional equivalent to Europe's CENTR (of which dotMobi is also a member.)

Over the past three years since the launch of .mobi, we've been to a lot of places — that's meant both figuratively and literally. However, we've barely touched down in Latin America … until now. The market there is quickly becoming receptive to the mobile Web. As Trey Harvin, dotMobi's CEO, noted in the announcement, "Latin America is … showing a year-over-year increase of mobile Web use of 0.6%, second only to North America's 1.1% increase." That information was from an interesting AdMob report. And more importantly, it shows how the mobile Web has quickly become a go-to tool for on-the-go folks.

A side-note statistic I saw recently: the iPhone only represents 13.3% of the global smartphone market, and that global smartphone market is in turn only 14.3 percent of the mobile phone market in 2Q09 — meaning that many, many people are using the mobile Web without an iPhone, or any smartphone at all. (See the report information here.)

I'm reading these numbers as: the iPhone may be driving interest in the mobile Web but people aren't waiting for an iPhone to access it — while apps may be cool, I agree with Google who say apps are ultimately limiting and the mobile Web will be accessed directly via type-in traffic or via search — both of which bear well for .mobi, everywhere in the world.

Just a week to go …

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Here at dotMobi, we’ve been so busy preparing for the availability of our new Chinese IDN / keywords bundle next week that I didn’t realize how quiet we’ve been on our blog.

The dotMobi / Huarui bundle of keywords and Chinese-language .mobi domains will be available beginning at 4 a.m. UTC on October 29, 2009, and will finish at 4 a.m. UTC on November 28, 2009. Immediately after on November 28, general registration will commence, and the keyword / Chinese-language .mobi domain bundle will be available at standard prices.

As you might guess, doing business in China is a unique experience, which is why this has absorbed much of the dotMobi team’s time. But one very big plus we have by being an Ireland-based company is help from Enterprise Ireland, who work around the world to develop Irish businesses internationally. Their help was extremely valuable in preparing to bring our first China-specific service to market.

To kick-off the launch activities, there was a formal signing ceremony in Beijing on October 13, 2009. Below is a photo from the event. In front on the left is Yang Zemin, President of the China Academy of Telecommunications Research (CATR), and on the right is Trey Harvin, CEO of dotMobi. Behind them, left to right, are Ambassador Declan Kelleher, Ireland’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Minister Billy Kelleher T. D., and Hugh Cooney, Chairman of Enterprise Ireland.

dotMobi Goes to Russia

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Russian Press Confernece

On 2 September 2009, Pinky Brand and Francesco Cetraro from dotMobi went to Russia to participate in a press conference hosted by Russia's largest registrar of domain names, RU-Center.

The primary reason for the conference was to introduce the availability of Instant Mobilizer to Russia via RU-Center.

If your Russian is strong, you can read this article about the event, as well as see a video recording of the complete event (it's 70 minutes long.) The machine translation of the article is located here (via Google Translate).

By the way, based on that Google translation, it looks like Russian words for "Internet domain" also means "blast zone." I can't help but think there's symbolism in that.

Mobile Banking Benchmarks Now Available

Friday, May 1st, 2009

If you've been following our news on the mobile benchmarks we've developed with our friends at Gomez, you'll be interested in seeing our mobile banking benchmarks that American Banker just ran.

The banking industry has proven to be especially fast in picking up on mobility in general, and on .mobi specifically. These benchmarks will definitely prove to be interesting as they're released on a monthly basis.
