.mobi Laundrush Launch

Members of the .mobi team on September 26, 2006

Five years ago — on September 26, 2006 — the .mobi domain opened its doors for registrations. Only five years ago but, back then, no iPhone. No Android. The Motorola Razr was still cool (if lower-end). My state-of-the-art mobile device was a Wi-Fi-enabled Palm device (without a phone). Conversations at mobile events often centered around Blackberries and what interesting things they could do.

Today, I know one person who still uses a Razr. Palm … thought about them lately, outside of the “What’s up with HP” discussions? Blackberry. We’ve all watched that stock drop; some of us are hoping they find a new niche rather than circle the dead pool. And who even saw an iPad on the horizon?

But, despite all those radical changes on the mobile front, .mobi as a domain has continued to grow. There are now more than one million active registrations and .mobi is the sixth largest generic Top-Level Domain in the world (.com, .net..org. .info and .biz come before it.) There are now two-character domains like nv.mobi and 53.mobi. There are now .mobi sites covering the world, in every vertical. (And in South Africa, “.mobi” is synonymous with “mobile website,” e.g., “Our product needs a .mobi built before we launch.”)

And mobile content is no longer an after-thought. Read what Google said just last week in regards to mobile-ready content and the Google advertising platform, “We will be introducing the mobile optimization of a website as a new factor of ads quality for AdWords campaigns that are driving mobile search traffic. As a result of this change, ads that have mobile optimized landing pages will perform better in AdWords — they will generally drive more mobile traffic at a lower cost.” [Italics mine.]

The .mobi domain was created to help make the mobile Web a viable endeavor. And we can all say the mobile Web, since then, is in everyday use. Did the .mobi domain alone do that? The iPhone certainly helped. But so did dozens of other convergent technologies and services. And it’s part of the reason the dotMobi company’s other products — primarily the goMobi site creator and DeviceAtlas mobile device database — have been successful. Our mobiForge cross-platform developer forum now has more than 50,000 active members, and our mobiThinking forum continues to be a sourcebook of choice for marketers globally.

In the photo above, one-third of us who were there then are here now. That’s a long time for anyone in the world of technology. And that’s a tribute to the belief we have in the .mobi domain, the dotMobi company, and the mobile Web.

So happy birthday, .mobi! It’s been five exciting years; I can’t wait to see what the next five hold!

goMobi Challenge — Extended and iPadded!

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

The goMobi Challenge is on now!

Given that it’s been a very hot summer this year, we decided everyone needed a few days to regroup for the goMobi Challenge.
Since we want to see just how personalized you can make a goMobi site, we’re giving you a little extra time to show us your stuff. We’ve extended the contest through October 17, 2010.

And along with the first-prize package of 100 one-year subscriptions to the goMobi product and highlighting you and your winning entry via an international press release, we’re giving the winner a 16 GB, WiFi-enabled iPad (all the better for looking at mobile websites).

But time is still short, so get going now.

The quest for more accessible Public Services – expectations of mobile Web!

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

One cannot underestimate the key role that the mobile Web is increasingly playing for businesses worldwide as they look for better channels to engage customers, provide services more efficiently and grow business.

At the same time, growing consumer awareness of the potential of mobile communication is rapidly changing expectations about the way that Public Administration will be interacting with citizens in the future. A growing demand for open access to data, together with the pressure created by the rationalization of public expenditures, mean that new technologies – and mobile in particular – will have a strong role to play in realizing the promise of a more efficient Public Administration.

Our partner Interact Spa, an Italian company focusing on digital innovation and Web 3.0 applications, has studied the phenomenon and is now providing us with an interesting insight in the potential of Mobile Government, drawing some key learnings from the experience of the Italian Public Administration with the mobile Web. The dotMobi design guidelines and tools like mobiReady are used extensively in the study to identify the best examples of good mobile experience and provide recommendations for improvement to the less fortunate experiments.

In a series of 3 articles that we will be publishing on mobiThinking over the next 3 weeks, Interact´s General Manager Andrea Volpini explains what m-Government is and what are the challenges associated with developing more accessible mobile sites and exploiting the mobile Web to provide better and more efficient services to the community.

The first introductory article is already online on MobiThinking: we hope you will enjoy reading it and that it will stimulate an interesting discussion on your experiences with m-Government and your expectations for the future.

Just a week to go …

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Here at dotMobi, we’ve been so busy preparing for the availability of our new Chinese IDN / keywords bundle next week that I didn’t realize how quiet we’ve been on our blog.

The dotMobi / Huarui bundle of keywords and Chinese-language .mobi domains will be available beginning at 4 a.m. UTC on October 29, 2009, and will finish at 4 a.m. UTC on November 28, 2009. Immediately after on November 28, general registration will commence, and the keyword / Chinese-language .mobi domain bundle will be available at standard prices.

As you might guess, doing business in China is a unique experience, which is why this has absorbed much of the dotMobi team’s time. But one very big plus we have by being an Ireland-based company is help from Enterprise Ireland, who work around the world to develop Irish businesses internationally. Their help was extremely valuable in preparing to bring our first China-specific service to market.

To kick-off the launch activities, there was a formal signing ceremony in Beijing on October 13, 2009. Below is a photo from the event. In front on the left is Yang Zemin, President of the China Academy of Telecommunications Research (CATR), and on the right is Trey Harvin, CEO of dotMobi. Behind them, left to right, are Ambassador Declan Kelleher, Ireland’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Minister Billy Kelleher T. D., and Hugh Cooney, Chairman of Enterprise Ireland.

Instant Mobilizer: Double Shortlisted!

Monday, September 7th, 2009

A lot of times, the real fun for the year starts after the sunny summer vacations … because September is the kick off of awards season! As proof, Instant Mobilizer has just been shortlisted in two different award competitions.

This past year, a lot of engineering work went into the launch of Instant Mobilizer, and we've seen that the efforts are paying off in use of the service as well as in recognition of the technical excellence of the service.

MCA09 nominee_Edited On 10 September, we find out if Instant Mobilizer will be named as "Best Technology Innovation" in Visiongain’s Mobile Content Awards 2009. The others on the Best Technology Innovation shortlist are RIM (Blackberry), Novarra, Wapple, and Acision.

WCA 09 Finalist logo A little later in the season, on 25 November, dotMobi will discover whether or not we've won "Best New Service" at Total Telecom's World Communication Awards 2009. For this one, we’re in competition with Banglalink, BT, TeliaSonera International and Zain.

Fingers crossed. Wish us luck!

Addendum on 10 September 2009: Just found out that dotMobi's Instant Mobilizer took the silver prize in the "Best Technology Innovation" category at Visiongain’s Mobile Content Awards 2009.

dotMobi Goes to Russia

Russian Press Confernece

On 2 September 2009, Pinky Brand and Francesco Cetraro from dotMobi went to Russia to participate in a press conference hosted by Russia's largest registrar of domain names, RU-Center.

The primary reason for the conference was to introduce the availability of Instant Mobilizer to Russia via RU-Center.

If your Russian is strong, you can read this article about the event, as well as see a video recording of the complete event (it's 70 minutes long.) The machine translation of the article is located here (via Google Translate).

By the way, based on that Google translation, it looks like Russian words for "Internet domain" also means "blast zone." I can't help but think there's symbolism in that.
