Last week we hosted an event loftily titled “The Future of the Mobile Web” at the Dublin Convention Centre.
We had a small but heavy-hitting guest list in the shape of the Riegers from Yiibu @stephanierieger, @ bryanrieger, Jason Grigsby @grigs and Lyza Danger @lyzadanger from Cloud Four, Nokia’s Andrea Trasatti @andreatrasatti, Dave Evans from Amobee, Ernesto Jimenez from Vodafone @ernesto_jimenez and Adobe’s Roger Wood @rogerjwoods.
The genesis of the event was admittedly self-serving – we spend far too much of our time debating the finer points of mobile web in here and felt there was a lot of noise in the debate that we wanted to cut through with the help of a broader, expert forum. But we also had a nobler motive: we wanted to see if we could establish some common ground/consensus on things like HTML 5.0, web versus native apps, responsive design, standards, fragmentation, the long tail of devices that are in use out there and other issues.
We managed to cover this and more in a frenzied day and half at the Dublin Convention Centre last week. I think we made good progress. There was plenty of common ground but there were certainly more nuances than at least I would was expecting. Bottom line? This stuff is not easy. It’s a complex landscape not just for developers but also for those whose job it is to formulate strategy. But we think we made some inroads into sorting out the myths from the realities and have enough to go on to provide some idea of the direction of travel. We are planning to get all these topics down and documented in a whitepaper that we will publish openly soon. So watch out for that. In the meantime, our sincere thanks to all the above who attended (and tweetstreaming on#fomw) the event last week and I look forward to next time.

dotMobi is happy to announce that we’ve just released version 3.2 of DeviceAtlas. This version introduces many new Web-focused properties that let developers fully harness the power of mobile devices with both DeviceAtlas Enterprise and DeviceAtlas Cloud.
We’ve also extended the property set of DeviceAtlas Cloud Premium to include all of the multimedia properties, making the property set at par with DeviceAtlas Enterprise.
The major focus for these new properties is HTML5, which allows advanced Web apps to be completely optimized and provide a faster, richer experience for end users. Having these properties on the server side means fewer requests for the client and less content that has to be sent. It’s a win-win on both sides!
We’ve also introduced a number of standard JavaScript properties that nicely complement the HTML5 set. Many devices, especially non-smart phones, have inconsistent support for JavaScript. These properties take the guesswork out and allow appropriate content to be sent to all users.
The other new property of note is Display PPI. This returns the pixel density for a device’s screen and can be used with the resolution properties to produce images that look sharp on any screen. Many new devices are being introduced with high-resolution “retina” displays, so it is becoming increasingly important to take pixel density into account when resizing images for devices.
This release also brings a new mobile site, built using the award-winning goMobi platform and full access to the Data Explorer for all registered users.
All of the new properties can be found listed on the property pages in our Resource Center.
If you have any questions or comments, please send them to da.tech@mtld.mobi.

Now the dust has settled on HostingCon 2011, and the team has recovered from the jetlag a quick post on how it all went. Lots of interest in goMobi both on stand and at the sessions and our unofficial HostingCon mobile site http://hc2011.mobi was a big hit with the attendees covering all the news parties, schedule and more. Some photos here.
People are telling us they need a solution that brings the latest technology developments together in a mobile web solution that is cost effective and easy to use. The new mobile marketing features of the latest goMobi release like QR codes and social media integration are resonating strongly with an increasingly mobile savvy market. The agenda has moved on from “what to do with mobile” to “what can mobile do for me and my business”.
We were of course delighted to announce our partnership with Parallels to make goMobi available as an APS package. So now the 10,000-plus Web services providers and resellers who use the Parallels platform can offer goMobi to their customers. Lots of positive pickup in the Twittersphere, thanks all for picking up the story on Twitter.
Now just as we’re back in the office with our feet under the desk, it’s time to start preparing for our next event. See you at Adtech London 2011 where we are Official Mobile Partner. Check out http://adtechuk.mobi on your phone.

As the headline says, it’s all about the numbers: specifically 3.0 and 1.4. Last week, we released version 3.0 of DeviceAtlas and — this past weekend — we released version 1.4 of goMobi. DeviceAtlas v3.0 takes the award-winning device detection database to the “cloud” so that smaller designers, development shops and agencies now have access to state-of-the-art device detection. But what about goMobi 1.4, what’s new with it? Well …
- You can now harness the power of social networks by integrating your goMobi site with sites like Facebook, Twitter, and foursquare.
- You can implement QR codes and print easy-to-design flyers to connect mobile and print marketing campaigns.
- You can access a custom analytics tool for traffic analysis, profiling and data gathering.
- You can upload photos through a hosted image gallery and customize your site with more icons and colors than ever before.
You may notice these new goMobi features have a common theme: building customer relationships by giving you additional ways to market your mobile site. After all, what good is spending the energy to build a cool mobile site if no one knows about it?
And while we were at it, we spent some time updating the goMobi website. Now, we have case studies, testimonials and example sites so you can get a better overview of why goMobi is the best choice, and how to use your site to drive customer loyalty and sales.

Webinar presenter Jason Spero of Google
On February 10, Google hosted a webinar called, “Think Mobile.” Unlike many webinars, this one was packed with information. The first half of the program was a presentation on the phenomenal growth of mobile by Mary Meeker, a partner at the investment firm of Kleiner Perkins.
The second half, presented by Google’s Dennis Woodside and Jason Spero, was a “wake-up call” to businesses about going mobile and what steps they should take to get there. For example, they noted that approximately 15% of all Web traffic now is mobile. That means not having a mobile site is like closing your website one day each week.
They then outlined a five-step program that businesses should follow for going mobile. Those five steps proved to be a strong validation of the philosophy behind — and methodology for building — our award-winning goMobi service. The five steps Google outlined during the webinar are:
- Build a mobile-specific site. (Three statements of importance: “Be prepared to let go of your desktop content.” “Build something and get it out there.” “Don’t spend forever doing it.” Those three statements are at the core of why we designed goMobi to work the way we did.)
- Build local. Your mobile site should have local in mind since one-third of mobile searches have “local intent.”
- Make it personal. Harness the personal aspects of mobile.
- Track independently. Make sure that you track activity on the mobile site separately from your desktop website.
- Iterate. Keep tweaking the site as you learn how people use it.
goMobi follows these same steps in helping small businesses create dynamic, valuable mobile websites. goMobi is a total solution, delivering a complete mobile website in mere minutes using existing Web content while delivering the best user experience possible, just as Google outlined it in their webinar. goMobi lets you:
- Build a mobile-specific site with information for on-the-go users and mobile-friendly features to help book more business.
- Build local with maps, business hours, coupons and reservations to encourage in-person visits.
- Make it personal by maintaining consistent branding for your business as well as stimulating word-of-mouth with links to social media.
- Track activity on the mobile site separately from your desktop website using Google Analytics.
- Iterate — and reiterate — your site content as often as you like while you test what will best drive additional business for you.
If you already use goMobi, you’ll know that it walks you through each of these points as you build your goMobi site.
And if you haven’t yet gone mobile, why not? The Web experts at Google are showing you that you’re missing business by not being mobile. And using goMobi ensures that you’ll follow the best practices for going mobile as laid out by Google.
So get going … and goMobi!

goMobi in action.
On Monday, 7 February, dotMobi released an upgrade to our award-winning goMobi product, bringing it to version 1.3.
While there’s lots to tell you about it, our friends at OpenSRS wrote a very good blog entry explaining everything you need to know about the new version.
So rather than reiterate what they’ve already said so well, let me direct you to their blog for full details.

The goMobi Challenge is on now!
Given that it’s been a very hot summer this year, we decided everyone needed a few days to regroup for the goMobi Challenge.
Since we want to see just how personalized you can make a goMobi site, we’re giving you a little extra time to show us your stuff. We’ve extended the contest through October 17, 2010.
And along with the first-prize package of 100 one-year subscriptions to the goMobi product and highlighting you and your winning entry via an international press release, we’re giving the winner a 16 GB, WiFi-enabled iPad (all the better for looking at mobile websites).
But time is still short, so get going now.

After completing a very successful visit to Russia with dotMobi’s Pinky Brand last week, I am currently attending the Second International conference for ccTLD registries and registrars of CIS, Central and Eastern Europe, an interesting event organized by the Russian Registry in the beautiful town of Bled, Slovenia.
The conference is well attended by many Registry operators and Registrars from these areas that not always able to attend ICANN meetings, and is thus a very good occasion to get a pulse of the domain market and the development of the internet in these countries.
Central and Eastern Europe and the countries of the CIS are
characterized by very high penetration of mobile phones. With a mobile-to-PC ratio in many cases close to 10 to 1, they are without doubt interesting markets for mobile Web solutions.
I was very happy to be invited to discuss the mobile Web and the great opportunities for growth and new useful services that it provides for businesses and end-users. I shared dotMobi´s experience in supporting open standards and accessibility, and talked about the importance of building mobile sites that are easy for users to find and that address the specific, unique needs of users on the go.
For users, the .mobi domain plays a pivotal role in building confidence by making made-for-mobile content easy to identify and access. And thanks to tools like Instant Mobilizer, the .mobi domain complements an existing desktop presence. I also talked about our unique ability to work collaboratively with ccTLDs.
After my presentation, I received several inquiries about Instant Mobilizer and DeviceAtlas — a clear sign that the market needs simple, effective solutions to make mobile Web publishing more accessible. Many Registrars here understand that mobile Web will have a very strong role in their future growth, and dotMobi is working actively to establish long-term partnerships to support these efforts.

On 2 September 2009, Pinky Brand and Francesco Cetraro from dotMobi went to Russia to participate in a press conference hosted by Russia's largest registrar of domain names, RU-Center.
The primary reason for the conference was to introduce the availability of Instant Mobilizer to Russia via RU-Center.
If your Russian is strong, you can read this article about the event, as well as see a video recording of the complete event (it's 70 minutes long.) The machine translation of the article is located here (via Google Translate).
By the way, based on that Google translation, it looks like Russian words for "Internet domain" also means "blast zone." I can't help but think there's symbolism in that.
